The Urban Ecosystem
Full Page Spread
This project was based on the local wildlife in Leiden, Netherlands, and how these animals have adapted to the urban structures and coexist with humans. I developed a full-page spread, a half-page spread, and a spot illustration (see below) I took an approach showing the animals existing alongside human-made structures, morphing into a windmill silhouette, and vignettes into the plant and animal life.

Process
I began thumb-nailing in my sketchbook to get a sense of the space I was going to fill, I then brought these roughs into Photoshop where I used digital brushes that I found best replicated pencil and rendered them out, finishing with digital colors that were consistent across both pieces. I found the compositions engaging, a microscopic vignette, and a grand/surreal interpretation of the article’s contents.
